The Philadelphia Eagles are adding veteran quarterback Andy Dalton to provide experience and depth behind starter Jalen Hurts.

According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, the Eagles have acquired 38-year-old Dalton from the Carolina Panthers.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Philadelphia is sending a 2027 seventh-round draft pick to Carolina in exchange.

Dalton, a longtime starting quarterback who made three Pro Bowls with the Cincinnati Bengals, spent the past three seasons with the Panthers.

In 2024, Panthers head coach Dave Canales benched Bryce Young, a Wynnewood native, in favor of Dalton after Week 2. Dalton started five games before suffering a thumb sprain in a car accident ahead of Carolina's Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos. Last season, he appeared in four games, starting one, and threw for 293 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Dalton spent nine seasons in Cincinnati, throwing for 31,594 yards, 210 touchdowns, and 120 interceptions in 133 starts. The Bengals released him in 2020 after selecting Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick. Dalton then transitioned to a backup role, signing with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, the Chicago Bears in 2021, the New Orleans Saints in 2022, and the Panthers in 2023. He started 14 games for the Saints in 2022 while Jameis Winston dealt with injuries.

The Eagles worked Dalton out before the 2011 NFL Draft. The Bengals selected him 35th overall, while the Eagles drafted Jason Kelce in the sixth round and Danny Watkins in the first round that year.

Last season, Tanner McKee and Sam Howell served as backups to Hurts. Although the Eagles are optimistic about McKee, the 25-year-old is entering the final year of his contract and could become a free agent after the 2026 season.

By acquiring Dalton before the 2026 NFL Draft, the Eagles gain flexibility in their quarterback room. They could trade McKee for a draft pick or enter training camp with Hurts, McKee, and Dalton as their quarterbacks.

Meanwhile, Carolina recently signed former Eagles quarterback and Super Bowl LIX champion Kenny Pickett to back up Bryce Young.
